| The Staff of the Ramsar Secretariat The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands is housed by The World Conservation Union (IUCN) in its headquarters building in Gland, Switzerland, on Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). Although the treaty secretariat is an independent body answering to the Contracting Parties to the Convention, and to the Standing Committee, Ramsar staff receive the benefits and services that IUCN staff members do and are legally considered as IUCN personnel. Cooperation between Ramsar and IUCN staff is extraordinarily close. The Convention on Wetlands is not part of the UN or UNEP system of environmental treaties, with many of the secretariats of which, however, Ramsar has established collaborative agreements.
