Indicators of effectiveness of the implementation of the Convention: scientific and technical guidance
| Action requested: The Standing Committee is invited to note the progress in the preparation of COP10 materials, about which a further update will be provided before and during SC37. |
1. As part of the priority work of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) during the 2006-2008 triennium, the Panel was requested to undertake further work on the development of ecological outcome-oriented indicators of the effectiveness of the Convention, as a follow-up to the material that was adopted by the 9th meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties as Resolution IX.1 Annex D.
2. Work to develop this task has been undertaken by the Panel's Working Group 1 on wetland inventory and assessment, and the Panel and Secretariat are grateful to Dave Pritchard and UNEP-WCMC for leading this work.
3. The STRP is preparing three products on the implementation of these indicators of effectiveness for COP10. These are:
i) an Implementation Plan for the full implementation of the first tranche of indicators adopted under Resolution IX.1 Annex D;
ii) updated fact sheets on these indicators following up on those sheets provided in Resolution IX.1 Annex D;
iii) some initial indicator assessments for certain of those indicators for which existing data is readily available, as a demonstration example of presentation of indicator results.
4. It had been anticipated
that the draft Implementation Plan (3.i above) would be ready for circulation
with the documents in advance of the 37th meeting of the Standing Committee,
but the finalization of this has been delayed. Further information on progress
will be provided to the Standing Committee before and during SC37.
