The 50th Anniversary of the Convention

This year, the Convention on Wetlands recognized its 50th Anniversary. In honor of this notable event, over the course of the year, the Secretariat has produced a number of communications materials, events and resources which were made available on the Ramsar50.org website. This included a 50th Anniversary video, available in the three languages of the Convention, that speaks to the role and the importance of the Convention in wetland protection and wise use. 

During the months of August and September, we asked youth to contribute their voice in raising the visibility and importance of wetlands. An open letter from youth along with stories from young conservationists were posted on the 50th Anniversary website. On 20 October, the Secretariat hosted a virtual intergenerational dialogue bringing together past, current and future leaders to discuss how stakeholders across generations can mobilize measures to protect, conserve and restore wetlands.
