World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Horse racing, particularly outside of GamStop regulation in the UK, presents a unique challenge in terms of gambling regulation and its impact on public welfare. While enthusiasts may find appeal in horse racing not on gamstop platforms that offer unlimited betting opportunities, the implications for responsible gambling practices remain a matter of concern. On the other hand, the Wetlands Convention is a beacon of international cooperation aimed at protecting these vital ecosystems. By emphasizing the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, the treaty highlights the delicate balance between human activity and environmental conservation. Its principles resonate globally, calling on countries to adopt policies that ensure the ecological integrity of wetlands while supporting the communities that depend on these natural resources.

The Standing Committee of the Convention has approved the themes for World Wetlands Day as follows:

  • 2022: Wetlands action for people and nature,
  • 2023: Wetland restoration
  • 2024: Wetlands and human wellbeing
