Senior Regional Advisor for Americas, Maria Rivera, is handing over the Ramsar Site certificate to the Minister of Environment of Colombia for the designation of the Complex of Wetlands of the Cauca River and Laguna de Sonso as the 7th Ramsar Site of Colombia.

Humedal localizado dentro del Parque Nacional Natural los nevados, en la cordillera Central de Colombia. El complejo se abastecen de agua a más de medio millón de colombianos. Su importancia,es elevada, para el ser humano y la naturaleza.

Coastline is changing. Mangroves along the coast are facing severe land use change due to unplanned city expansion, diminishing the ecosystem services these provide to society such as extreme tides control. Cartagena city, as many others located by the sea, is seriously threated by sea level rise and increase of extreme events frequency, and mangroves are natural barriers which reduce the impact of these phenomena. Unfortunately unplanned urban soil expansion is taking over this ecosystems, increasing the exposure of society to sea level change risks and demanding in the future expensive grey infrastructure based solutions for a problem which nature can help us to solve for free.

Traditional fisherman launches his "atarraya" looking for the catch of the day early in the morning. In the past, before the coastal wetland was degraded with polluted waters from the surrounding city of Cartagena and it's communicating channels with the sea closed due to unplanned city expansion, fish production was remarkable, supporting the native people from fishers town La Boquilla to live from fish commercialization only. Nowadays this natural resource is so scarce that fishing in most cases is a unwanted job, only practiced by elders.
