2022 Ramsar Wetlands Conservation Awards
The eighth edition of the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards were presented on 7 November 2022 at a ceremony held in Geneva, Switzerland, at the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands (COP14).
Three Awards were granted and each recipient received the Evian Special Prize of US$ 10,000 offered by the Danone Group as part of its support to the Convention. The Awards were presented in the following categories:
- the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award for Wetland Wise Use, rewarding a contribution to the long-term sustainable use of wetlands presented to Mr Masayuki Kurechi, Board Member of Ramsar Network Japan;
- the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award for Wetland Innovation, rewarding innovative techniques that contributes to the wise use of wetlands, presented to Ms Carla Ximena Giraldo Malca of Peru, and;
- the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award for Young Wetland Champions, rewarding a young person or a group of young people between the ages of 18 and 30 who have contributed to the wise use of wetland, presented to Ms Fernanda Samuel, National Coordinator of Mangrove Protection and Restoration, Angola.
Additionally, a Merit Award recognizing long-term contribution and Commitment to the conservation and wise use of wetlands and Ramsar principles was presented to Jérôme Bignon, chair of the Association Ramsar France.
The Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards recognize and honour the contributions of individuals, organizations, and governments around the world in promoting the conservation and wise use of wetlands. They were established at COP6 in 1996 through Resolution VI.18, and have now been awarded eight times.
